Lamplighters
Class
The nucleus
of the original Lamplighters Class was a part of the "Come
Double" class, a young married couples class. Our class
came out of that class because of the growth of the church in
the early 1970's. Lamplighters chose their name based on a tradition
that we felt had helped create a common bond between us in the
early days of the class. As our class began to grow, the socials
became an important part of our fellowship. An old floor lamp,
chipped paint, old silk lampshade, tattered and torn (you get
the picture), was selected to be the "surprise grand prize"
for the winner of the game of the evening at a social one night.
The group that night decided that if a person won the lamp, he
or she would be the next host for the social, and it was the
person's responsibility to come up with a way to pass it on to
someone else. In addition, each person who "won" the
lamp had to add a special touch to the dÈcor of the thing!
As with all faithful servants, the lamp became tired and very
heavy-laden with its monster dÈcor. So, the time came
to give it eternal rest. A very fitting funeral was held at Elliott-Hamil's
on Highway 277, with music ("The Old Lamplighter"),
pallbearers, and a fitting party afterward. Our class, however,
has managed to carry on without it. Our class sponsors Bowie
Elementary School, and hosts a luncheon every year for the Fifth
Graders at that school.
