Local Mission Field

We believe that service in our local surroundings is just as important as serving those in need around the world. For this reason, our local mission field serves as one of the cornerstones of our mission of raising up deeply devoted disciples of Jesus.

We define service in our mission field as church-wide sponsored initiatives through which Aldersgate is called to demonstrate God’s love and grace in tangible ways to people in close proximity of the church building. Our local mission field includes four major focus areas:

Aldersgate Academy

Every week, 125 families entrust Aldersgate Academy with their precious children (ages birth through 5 years) for their weekday childcare and educational needs. Through the cutting edge curriculum, participation in chapel services and the attentive care of our staff members, the children learn that God loves them and that we love them, too! The children’s guardians are part of this missionfield, as well, as they raise their children amid full schedules and life’s various challenges. For more information about serving the children, families and teachers of Aldersgate Academy, please contact Carol Rogers.

McMurry University

Aldersgate was founded almost 70 years ago to be a university church, as it is located on the campus of McMurry University, the official United Methodist university of the Northwest Texas and New Mexico conferences. Today, that connection continues through vibrant college ministry and various opportunities for the congregation to connect with the students, faculty and staff of the university. For more information and/or to get involved, please call (325) 672-7893.

Bowie Elementary School

Between 85 and 90 percent of the students at Bowie live in the neighborhood around the church building. At Aldersgate, we seek to support our neighborhood school in a variety of ways, including back-to-school events for the teachers, students and families, a mentoring program for students, a weekend food program for eligible families, a coat drive each fall, Christmas gifts before the winter break, a celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, end-of-the year events for students and families and more. In all of our interactions at Bowie, we seek to show God’s love in real and tangible ways. For more information, please contact Amy Wilson Feltz.

Our Neighborhood

At Aldersgate, we seek to be good neighbors in the most literal sense. Our most visible manifestation of our relationship with our neighbors can be found in the Open Door Community Garden at South 19th and Amarillo. The garden is a place of growth, of food and of relationships. Each year, we plant rows and keyholes of delicious produce, which is free to anyone who needs it. Each summer, we gather for a block party in July. And this fall and winter, we plan to celebrate the seasons with a pumpkin patch, a Thanksgiving meal and a community Christmas Tree lighting.
